Orange Shirt Day – Sept. 30, 2019

September marks the time of year when Indigenous children were removed from their homes to attend residential schools set up by the Canadian Government and churches. The last residential school remained open until 1996.

#Orangeshirtday is a day to support the survivors of the residential school system. The colour orange comes from Phyllis’ story of the St. Joseph Mission (SJM) residential school, wherein Phyllis had her new orange shirt stripped from her on her first day of school at the Mission.

Wear orange on September 30th (shirt, ribbon, button, bracelet, or sticker) to raise awareness about the legacy of colonialism and the residential school system.
